Previously, Mt. Airy USA offered eligible homeowners matching grants of up $15,000 to make interior and exterior repairs on their homes through its Curb Appeal program. The grants could be used for plumbing and heating renovations, electrical work, and exterior painting and masonry repairs.
Spotlight: Eloise Williams- Eloise Williams lives in a solid old row house on West Weaver Street . She’s taken good care of the two-story brick home since moving there 18 years ago, but the years had caught up. Several wooden windows needed to be replaced. The bricks needed pointing. Some of the electrical wiring had to be upgraded. The basement door had to be replaced and the back stairs needed patching. Taken as a whole, those individual repairs can be costly. Fortunately for Eloise, she lived on one of the Mt. Airy blocks designated for Curb Appeal matching funds. After meeting with a housing counselor from Mt. Airy USA , she found out she qualified for a Curb Appeal grant. She signed up and was given a $3,000 grant. The work was completed in February 2004.
“Without the Curb Appeal grant, I would have had to make these repairs a little at a time,” says Eloise. “By the time I thought I was finished, I’d have a whole new set of repairs waiting.”
